On a scale of 1 to 4, with 1 being "no worries" and 4 being "freakout time," how worried should we be of a Trumpian coup?

That's the right distinction. There's a very low chance this will succeed but having a president who thinks like this is very bad.

Having a president who thinks like this is very bad. Having a major political party and significant percentage of the population that supports it (or at least doesn't condemn it) is vastly worse.

Having a president who thinks this way who retains very significant support within his political party is extremely bad.

A significant chunk of the population just nodding their heads and going along with it is worse. The military not being onboard isn't too reassuring, they're the last thing keeping it all from being plausible. One failure point away from the abyss.

I'm in two minds about what counts as a coup. It's bad, but if this is a coup, I feel the response should be different. Is everyone who opposes the coup really doing what one should do in response to a coup? Just wait a month? At what point will violence by justified in response?

There is *no chance* of a successful coup de main in the proper sense of the term. There is a moderate chance of widespread violence by Trump’s partisans (using the term in the kinetic sense). Worst of all is the certainty that he has gravely wounded trust in honest elections.

People saying there’s no chance, after seeing what’s happened over these last 4 years, scares me the most.
