I think this might be partially an age thing. (No offense, you write with youthful exuberance!) In my cohort, I definitely see it used quite a lot in a straightforward context

Oh yeah, I'm sure the kids use it a fair bit. But that's fairly specialized. It's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Yes, and note that it is not Latino people who seem to be taking the most issue with it, despite the apparent complaint being that the majority of Latinos do not support its use.
