In terms of projection, I would be surprised if McClellan thought in those terms. My sense is that McClellan failed because he did not understand the war in the way those who succeeded him did.

Is it? Lee's first independent command was in western Virginia and was a real dud. McClellan, too, got his start in that theater (I don't know of the overlap, if any) and may have used Lee's failure there as evidence.

McClellan was an engineer. He was too methodical, everything had to be in order before he moved. If Grant or Sherman had been in command during the Peninsular Campaign, the North would have taken Richmond three years earlier.

It is and it isn't. That WAS Lee's reputation, which had been damaged by how badly the men under his overall command were whipped by McClellan's in West Virginia. That said, McClellan showed timidity in West Virginia too and was bailed out by others.
