George McClellan thought Robert E. Lee was "cautious and weak under grave responsibility....likely to be timid and irresolute in action." Just an amazing example of projection.pic.twitter.com/NyyHIcRTrS

In terms of projection, I would be surprised if McClellan thought in those terms. My sense is that McClellan failed because he did not understand the war in the way those who succeeded him did.

Is it? Lee's first independent command was in western Virginia and was a real dud. McClellan, too, got his start in that theater (I don't know of the overlap, if any) and may have used Lee's failure there as evidence.

The way we evaluate McClellan is influenced by the fact that we know how things turned out, an advantage McClellan didn't have at the time.

McClellan was an engineer. He was too methodical, everything had to be in order before he moved. If Grant or Sherman had been in command during the Peninsular Campaign, the North would have taken Richmond three years earlier.

It is and it isn't. That WAS Lee's reputation, which had been damaged by how badly the men under his overall command were whipped by McClellan's in West Virginia. That said, McClellan showed timidity in West Virginia too and was bailed out by others.

Honestly, was McClennan right about anything?
