Apropos of nothing: can anyone articulate the reason why it’s ok for adults to use swear words but not children? Why can’t kids swear? I know they shouldn’t but I’m realizing I don’t have a good reason, if a kid challenged me on this I’d be stumped.

I think that's the issue with kids, difficult to clarify when it is and is not appropriate.

I think generally, let your kids learn from you. Swear when your upset. Swear when your happy. Swear when you frustrated. Just don't swear at Weddings or Funerals.

Mine was 2 when she used "shit" correctly when ice cold water dropped down the back of her neck in winter.

I got a note sent home from preschool about my 3 year old: "I dropped a flower pot and Charlotte said 'oh, shit!'". I was proud, that kind of situation calls for some mild profanity!
