Apropos of nothing: can anyone articulate the reason why it’s ok for adults to use swear words but not children? Why can’t kids swear? I know they shouldn’t but I’m realizing I don’t have a good reason, if a kid challenged me on this I’d be stumped.

I think it’s because the definition of many swear words involve adult topics, but “shit” isn’t one of them, and is probably the first bad word most kids learn.

One time a kid asked me why certain words were “bad” and others aren’t. I couldn’t come up with a solid answer.

Normalizing swearing as a part of everyday speech means you don’t have anything stronger to reach for when a situation really calls for it. A good expletive is a sometimes treat.
