to paraphrase recent twitter, Incompetent Fascism is still on the same Political Spectrum as Real, Hitler Fascism

FTM, most fascism is fundamentally pretty incompetent. Nazis & Italian fascists were no exception.

It's not so much about Trump personally as the path he's taking. A smarter, better, less toxic politician in a closer race now has a playbook to follow.

The idea that Trump isn't "dependent on mass politics of any sort" completely misses that the Fox News/right wing media infrastructure has is the most powerful organizing force in mass politics. Recognizing that no matter what Trump does that persists sinks the argument.

this assumes, wrongly to a large extent imo, that authoritarianism can't be weak

Not sure I understand your point, here, Jeet. 'Weak' & 'not-authoritarian-threat' are in no meaningful way synonymous - not remotely so. In fact 'weakness' of the type being described strongly disposes a leader TOWARD authoritarianism.

So what do we want? A strong biosecurity surveillance state?

Corey's right, but the problem is people take away the message 'nothing to worry about here' when they read him, rather than grapple with his argument about our institutions crippling democracy (ironically, only P. Buttigieg, no leftie, fully grasps the latter argument).

I’d say the real authoritarian is Mitch McConnell and Trump is merely his puppet.
-
I’d argue along similar lines that McConnell has been systematically (though unintentionally) weakening the GOP for as long as he has been in power by making it more and more dependent on minoritarian institutions that could eventually be vulnerable to democratic reforms.
