oh yeah. if john kerry had won ohio, i think there is a good chance republicans would have refused to concede under the *entirely reasonable argument* that bush won a majority of the voting public and archaic, arbitrary rules are no reason to overturn an electoral majority.https://twitter.com/chrislhayes/status/1337554108698554369 …

Twice in the last 20 years Democrats have had to swallow and accede to a Presidential candidate taking office who get less votes than the Democratic candidate. Think we're seeing pretty clear evidence that if the roles had been reversed that...probably wouldn't have happened.

I wish I could remember where I read this but I do remember reading that in 2004 the Bush people were fully prepared to argue they won if they got more popular vote and Kerry won electoral college.

You misremember. They thought they would win the popular vote and lose the EC in 2000, not 2004. But they were prepared to argue the EC needed to go then.

I know about 2000 but I'm pretty sure in 2004 as well.

In fact, the Bush campaign in 2000 was explicitly making the argument that they wouldn’t concede if Gore won the electoral college but lost the popular vote

This was also their strategy in 2000. https://www.nydailynews.com/archives/news/bush-set-fight-electoral-college-loss-article-1.881690 …

I don't think Bush would have waged war on Gore's or Kerry's legitimacy the way Trump is, though. Or even tried to throw out Ohio's EVs. They'd have called for a constitutional amendment and the Dems might have conceded; it would die in the states.

No. I think it was in 2000 bc the polls indicated Bush might win pop vote but lose EC, and Cheney led an internal group planning ways to flip electors.

That would have been from some Strict Constructionalists or, as they are more accurately known, Strict Contortionists.
