The guy in the WSJ is a fruity little weirdo, yes, but it is also weird to call yourself "doctor" off your doctorate, i grew up around academics and that's something that is seen as not quite right

As a PhD holder, in everyday settings, no. (I have PhD mentioned in my username as an artefact of trying to find a username that identified me, someone with a common name.) In formal settings, use my title thank you. Otherwise
I understand it’s more of an issue for women. -
And by that last comment, it seems likely that were we talking about Kamala Harris’ husband, if he held a PhD, nobody would be questioning his doctor-ness.
