For me at least something abt sneering incuriosity (esp from leftists) rankles more than the uncritical boosterism I know to expect...not least when it’s underwritten by the quite similar conviction that cultural consumption can serve as a proxy for ethical/political commitment!

On here! I find it odd that the knee jerk response to ppl being overly enthused abt mass culture is not to reckon w what may genuinely appeal in it - the Jamesonian “fantasy bribe” as it were - but to accuse them of having bad, politically retrograde taste.
