The countryside in those situations had more population than the cities iirc. Urban areas today are much more dense and especially in the US rural areas are much less populated.

Except there are no people in the countryside. And California and other blue states can feed the entire country.

I think part of Matt's point though is that most parts of California capable of feeding us through agriculture are not "blue" at all.

I live in the country, am a democrat, and a veteran. I am not too concerned about the military prowess of Yallqueda.... most are to fat to wear their plate carriers (that generally are not holding plates).
