Did any Republican candidates run on Dianne Feinstein being soft on Amy Coney Barrett? No. Did lots of Republican candidates run on Democrats being in favor of defunding the police? Yes.

You keep arguing that Democrats would have done better in downballot races if they had taken a more radical approach, even though the Dem candidate who did best with voters was a moderate. What's the actual evidence for this argument?

Running competent hearings and having the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee not be in manifest cognitive decline is not a radical position. It's a moderate or even conservative position.

I was not in favor of Feinstein being the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and am glad she's stepping down. Her hug of Lindsey Graham - or her conduct of the hearings - did not make Republican/Republican-leaning voters vote Republican in downballot races.

I'd say Barrett's sharp improvement in favorability during the course of the hearings indicates 1) people were paying attention and 2) the hearings helped Trump. See here for a South Carolina view.pic.twitter.com/fFtCIL0l4M

Right. And your argument is that if Dems were more obstructionist before the inevitable confirmation, it would have *reduced* enthusiasm among GOP voters. That makes no sense.

Obstructionist isn't the only option. They could have effectively made the case that ACB is an extremist. Which happens to be the truth. It's noteworthy that ACB's approval AMONG DEMOCRATS improved over hearings.

Can someone please run a survey to determine what percentage of Americans even know that the hug took place?

To be fair, I think it’s not so much the hug as that it’s just a month and change later and people who don’t really follow politics have already forgotten that the Barret nomination was controversial. It didn’t have to be this way.

I agree, but the hug came up because there's a big New Yorker story on Feinstein and everyone wants to scapegoat her for the Democrats' messaging failures. She's a problem, but many other Democrats need to do better.

She was literally the top Democrat on the judiciary committee, so bears a lot of responsibility.

I'm still waiting for evidence that more than a trivial number of voters know the hug happened. Please let me know when you have it.
