It's safe to say this hug had zero effect on down-ballot voters.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1336890946684821505 …

If the Democrats were a serious political party aiming at power (instead of a job program for insiders), they would think about how Feinstein's hug of Lindsey Graham hurt them with down ballot voters. pic.twitter.com/0sIaIIk884

So for the record your position is that the words and actions of a powerful Senator dealing with a key issue (the courts) has no impact but a slogan that the party did not adapt had an impact.

For the record, my position is that to a close approximation, zero voters voted Republican because Dianne Feinstein hugged Lindsey Graham, and that some downballot voters voted Republican because they believed Democrats wanted to slash spending for the police.

Did any Republican candidates run on Dianne Feinstein being soft on Amy Coney Barrett? No. Did lots of Republican candidates run on Democrats being in favor of defunding the police? Yes.

You keep arguing that Democrats would have done better in downballot races if they had taken a more radical approach, even though the Dem candidate who did best with voters was a moderate. What's the actual evidence for this argument?

Running competent hearings and having the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee not be in manifest cognitive decline is not a radical position. It's a moderate or even conservative position.

I was not in favor of Feinstein being the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and am glad she's stepping down. Her hug of Lindsey Graham - or her conduct of the hearings - did not make Republican/Republican-leaning voters vote Republican in downballot races.

I'd say Barrett's sharp improvement in favorability during the course of the hearings indicates 1) people were paying attention and 2) the hearings helped Trump. See here for a South Carolina view.pic.twitter.com/fFtCIL0l4M

Right. And your argument is that if Dems were more obstructionist before the inevitable confirmation, it would have *reduced* enthusiasm among GOP voters. That makes no sense.

The pool of potential voters who: a) paid attention to the Barrett hearings and b) chose not to vote because Dems were insufficiently tough is vanishingly small. But they're the only ones who could have improved Dems' performance in downballot races.

The fact that there was a SCOTUS confirmation hearing may have helped Republicans. But how would Feinstein change that? Did she tell Ginsburg to stay on the court in 2014?
