I agree, but this is essentially the principle the GOP uses when they throw individual politicians like Kemp under the bus to placate their base, and you take a decidedly different view in that case.

He was far more popular than the Republican Party was in South Carolina up until his death. The seniority system though bizarrely gave him a much more prominent role after he became senile than he ever had before

This isn’t entirely fair - “what the tories did to thatcher” arguably made the tories unelectable for 18 years after 1992. Perhaps served the party in the short term but inflicted major long term damage.
