Jeet Heer added,
I highly recommend the Brewer book! Lots of fascinating examples of "character migration" (figures from one literary work popping up in others, often by different authors) across the 18th century
Yes, I think "character" as something that cross from one text to another (and one creator to another) is undertheorized. I often think about how Stephen Dedalus shows up not just in Ulysses but also Finnegans Wake.
I have loved dipping and diving in and out of the Wake for the past 30-odd years but have never sat down and read it cover to cover
I made one serious attempt in grad school. Probably due for another but I think I’d want to do it with a book club or something
Big regret on my piece about Hugh Kenner and Guy Davenport was not using these two perfect sentences from Finnegans Wake: "To add gay touches. For hugh and guy and goy and jew."
