Jeet Heer added,
I highly recommend the Brewer book! Lots of fascinating examples of "character migration" (figures from one literary work popping up in others, often by different authors) across the 18th century
Yes, I think "character" as something that cross from one text to another (and one creator to another) is undertheorized. I often think about how Stephen Dedalus shows up not just in Ulysses but also Finnegans Wake.
My big pandemic project is to finally finish Finnegans Wake. It's actually a good read for these times -- very diverting.
Best way to read the Wake is to do it aloud. Things that were obscure spring into life and meaning.
