One can only speak from personal experience, but the assigned readings that had the biggest impact on me as a high-school student were King Lear, Crime & Punishment, & Hofstadter's American Political Tradition. More YA stuff left me cold.

In Quebec, grade 13 would be the second year of CEGEP, which does make sense as I did have a class on American history there (no Hofstadter though).
