I don't know--China is actually building new coal plants, so US hegemony might still be better than the alternative.

China's per-capita emissions are still a tiny fraction of the US's. They could keep building coal plants for a while, then pivot towards green energy, and still be far ahead of the US on decarbonization, even assuming the US starts decarbonizing now.
