The difference in France is that Matzneff was doing it out in the open, wrote diaries about it; he even talked about it on literary shows. Everybody knew about it, and there has always been a vocal contingent arguing this was not only normal but should be made legal as well.

In all the other cases, knowledge of those activities was reserved to a closed circle, and their revelation led to unmitigated scorn and opprobrium in the world at large. In France (see also: Polanski), this was casually discussed in the country's most respectable broadsheets.
