2. To be fair, there's much to admire in @CaitlinPacific piece, including the evocation of Tadahito Mochinaga's masterful puppetry (I had always wondered about where the decorative elegance of the stop-motion animation came from).

I haven't seen it in a long time but doesn't it have a lot about bullying inclusion and belonging? I remember it as a parable on how everyone has worth and difference is a good thing.

It does, and is, but it gets there by rationalizing a lot of abusive behavior, and the oppressive hierarchies remain at the end. That said, I can't imagine a better primer for kids on why radical change is necessary than a critical viewing of it, and the aesthetics rule.
