      1. This is very clarifying on the inter-Democratic debate on climate between Biden/establishment and Sunrise/activists. The divide is over whether to get try and get a buy-in from fossil fuel industry.https://twitter.com/JesseJenkins/status/1331090312551391233 …

Biden is reportedly considering Ernie Moniz to reprise role as Sect. of Energy. @MiriamWasser explains why that's proven controversial in this carefully reported piece. In it, I explain why I think this debate is really about conflicting theories of change https://amp.wbur.org/earthwhile/2020/11/23/ernie-moniz-biden-energy-secretary-sunrise-movement-climate-change?__twitter_impression=true … pic.twitter.com/nKDKTRsnGr

      2. Biden/establishment Dem approach to climate is same as their approach to health care (where they structured reform to buy-in insurance industry): let's buy in fossil fuel industry. Sunrise/activist see industry as something to fight, not buy off or buy in.

The problem with the buy-in approach is that you wind up in a political Zeno's Paradox: the bought-in parties use their leverage to cut everything down to half-measures. You nibble at the edges and some stuff gets better but there are always holes.

If healthcare is the paradigm, then a buy in is waste of time. We essentially abandoned universal care for universal "access" that left people unable to get or afford care. Climate doesn't have the runway to course correct if we wind up in the same place as healthcare right now.

And industry that has published disinformation consistently is not a friend or ready to change. Even companies like Blackrock signal change, and still fund disinfo.

The problem to this point it is getting buy-in for change from Wall St/industry always seems to undermine or marginalize serious, badly needed, economic reforms.

This analysis overlooks a key third constituency: the power of organized labor and its opposition to killing fossil fuel companies that provide good paying jobs.

It's easy to crit the "buy in" approach but destroy them seems like a hellava big reach. How the hell do we do that? Is that even possible? Doesn't seem like it. The R's still have power and 22 isnt' far away. In short, we ain't destroying the big companies.
