Do political parties exist to advance causes or do causes exist to advance political parties? A lot of the debates about the Democratic party basically come down to this divide.

In theory that's how it works, but to use a market analogy, the Democratic party has what amounts to a monopoly on Dem-leaning votes, so they don't really have to "offer" anything.

Most of the countries you’re talking about have actual democracies instead of a pseudo-democracy like America where winning more votes can often put you in the minority if you have the wrong voters.

There are political positions that guarantee you won't be the one who governs. So they must be avoided. Winning matters. The stakes are very very high.

The moderate viewpoint would be "good government" is all that needs to be offered. That is, implement existing laws and programs in a fair and efficient way. I would argue Kamala Harris was chosen partly for that reason - she is a competent administrator. Anything more is gravy.

Most parties in these countries have strong inter party cohesion and run on one platform. Canada, UK and Australia both have substantial minority parties in parliament to the left of the main centre left party who are minority parties because their ideas are less popular.
