The Hoover-FDR handover from 1932-1933 is usually regarded as the most disastrous transition since the Civil War -- but I have to say, I think what's happening now is shaping up to be much worse. An active sabotage.

Yes, I'm hoping to use his book for a larger column on this.

The book on that period had the very apt title of "Interregnum of Despair." I imagine we'll be calling this one "Interregnum of Stupidity."

The UC Davis historian Eric Rauchway wrote a book just on the Hoover-FDR transition: https://www.basicbooks.com/titles/eric-rauchway/winter-war/9780465094585/ …

Not because what Hoover did, but because of 6 months interregnum

Any thoughts on whether Trump will sabotage the omnibus spending bill that needs to be enacted by Dec 11?

I think the odds are pretty good that we will have a shutdown. However, if the Dow starts crashing as a result, Trump will panic and sign anything since he obviously thinks "Dow 30,000" is his greatest achievement besides breaking up thousands of families on the border.

Don't forget, the Trump admin failed at transition on the way in as well. They had very few dept head selected and the Obama admin was ready to provide assistance and no one showed up (other than the Obama/Trump meeting).

I was just going to say, the only reason that wasn't considered disasterous was because it was overshadowed by the total lack of competent governance that came later.
