I don't think people have internalized how large Biden's popular vote victory was. It's a historic repudiation of a sitting president.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1329678134170382336 …

A reminder: the votes are still being counted but Joe Biden is on track to win the popular vote by 7 million votes. There are 35 American states with less than 7 million people.

And also almost exclusively that. Dems should be extremely weary about the future.

Or maybe they would be more regionally competitive with candidates like Biden, which is not a message they particularly want to hear.

The EC obfuscates a lot of what’s actually meaningful about elections.

Wish it could have equally been an expression of the popularity of a challenger, but that would mean a completely different challenger. It really did take a legitimate crisis of democracy to finally make Biden a bride instead of a bridesmaid.

I mean, it's not even that bad. They lost some seats in the house and gained in the senate, leaving them in prime position to take it in 2022. Some of the losses were crushing in the face of expectations and frustration rooted in the senate's present behavior, but...

Unless my numbers are off, it's a smaller margin than the last two incumbents to lose reelection, no?

Not really comparable because in both those elections large third part candidates (Anderson, Perot) made for starker results.

The “35 states with a population of less than 7 million” is a weird factoid and I’m not sure I understand the point of it. So Biden won by a margin of “one medium-to-large state”—is that remarkable?

Possibly what’s more remarkable is that American elections have been so consistently close in the last few decades. It’s as if there’s a balancing mechanism that swings into play when one side gets too far ahead.
