Watched Ronald Reagan Doc Part 1 tonight. It is good but way too fast. Why did RR career go down in the late 30s? Why didn't he enlist in the Army? Why did he divorce Jane Wyman? What was his role in the Anti-American Committee? All of that in 5 minutes.

Rick Perlstein's book The Invisible Bridge, although long, is good on most of these issues. A great read too.

I just have no sufficient interest to read Caro-like biographies. But I would have liked about twice as much time (in the documentary) on each of these issues...Well...

The Perlstein book is a time commitment but worth it. Really illuminates the nature of the American right in a way that few books do.

If I want to read Invisible Bridge and Reaganland, will it be an issue if I don't read Nixonland first?

No, each book is stand alone although some themes recur.
