On the @SWAtlasHoover front, there’s a fascinating story to be told that @Stanford and particularly the @HooverInst has been a hot spot of covid misinformation from basically the beginning of the pandemic. It’s not just Atlas.

About 6 months late, but: while Ioannidis has an infectious disease background, SPRC is a behavioral health shop and Ioannidis is regarded as one of the big stats wonks. While the basics of epidemiology haven't changed, it's still a little weird he was taking point on that study.

I only read the preprint--the memory of which got buried under various strata of horror--and I'm not at SPRC anymore, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out he wasn't the PI. He's a born contrarian and 90% of the time it's fantastic. Then there's that 10% of the time.

And in parallel--the Hoover Institute is just a conservative economic think tank which buys undeserved cred from its surroundings. To the point where my sister, a political economist, turned down an offer from them because she was worried it would tank her career as an academic.

Its main connection to the larger academic world at Stanford is that sometimes undergrads do the catering.
