This is a smart thread. I agree that the dominant fact is that Trump was at heart of election. Whatever misgivings one might have about Biden's strategy, he did construct one of the few possible coalitions that could defeat Trump.https://twitter.com/Nate_Cohn/status/1327623039996006401 …

Is it possible that another coalition, one that tried to fight Trump's advantage among non-college voters head on, could also have won? I think so but Democratic party and primary voters didn't want to risk it. And given threat of Trump, it's hard to blame them for avoiding risk

Yes, it’s possible. It’s also incredibly unlikely and leftists ought to soberly acknowledge the world as it is and start from there!l desire or the ought.

The "world as it is" is in part shaped by deliberately decisions taken by political parties. Abandoning non-college voters is something parts of the Democratic party is choosing to do (Schumer's famous comments are salient).

Jeer, c’mon. Who are you taking too? But it’s not abandonment, it’s just recognizing where the realistic margins are and where they aren’t. And honestly, political coalitions “abandon” voting cohorts all the time. Dems lose white evangelicals 4-1. They’ve abandoned them.

The wc possibilities for Dems is mostly the “new working cksss” which is more multi racial, Franke, and urban than the rural wwc, also non unionized now and disaggregated. Just trying to get enough votes to win and maybe then change stuff.

Sure, that's where the future is -- and reaching those people will require something different than the provisional coalition you needed to defeat Trump.

Somewhat different—but, even with the Latino collapse of perhaps 13%, Dems got majority of those voters. And turnout was crazy high for both coalitions. It’s very complicated and doesn’t lend itself to many axiomatic certainties.
