This is a smart thread. I agree that the dominant fact is that Trump was at heart of election. Whatever misgivings one might have about Biden's strategy, he did construct one of the few possible coalitions that could defeat Trump.https://twitter.com/Nate_Cohn/status/1327623039996006401 …

So the anti elitist voters put in Trump who lavished elites w tax cuts, and who repeatedly tried to strip healthcare protections/coverage? Sorry, but race is inextricably tied to the anti elite right wing faux populism.

I’d say middle class contempt towards the less well off is what got us here

The less well off voted decisively for Biden: those making more than $100,000 voted for Trump. Sam is right, though, to describe the core problem facing the country as the electoral mobilizing appeal of White grievance and resentment.

Lower income voters voted in higher numbers for Biden.

"Non-college-educated" is not the same as "less well off". The less well off went for Biden. Trump's base is non-college-educated white guys who are actually doing pretty well. (Think contractors, small business owners, etc.)

Not college educated includes a lot of plumbers, HVAC, cops, etc... Making well over 100k a year. They went for Trump. They're not poor.

Jeet, there is a reason the majority of white Americans have voted Republican or RW populist since 1968, & elite contempt is just a story we tell ourselves.
