This is a smart thread. I agree that the dominant fact is that Trump was at heart of election. Whatever misgivings one might have about Biden's strategy, he did construct one of the few possible coalitions that could defeat Trump.https://twitter.com/Nate_Cohn/status/1327623039996006401 …

Going forward, we have to think about the conditions that fuelled Trump's rise. In 2 elections 46% and 47% of population supported an anti-system candidate. That would suggest there is a problem with the system.

One of the unknowns of the election, which we're going to need a lot more research to figure out, is how Covid played out. Trump's bungling hurt him but uncertainty of stimulus meant that many ordinary people were forced into "economy vs. covid" frame, which helped Trump.

ehm, Biden's campaign is directly responsible for costing us ANOTHER redistricting cycle, losing seats in the House, and (barring a miracle) not taking the Senate which means no judicial reform. I'd say the risk was Biden, but whatevs

He could have formed the same coalition and still been much more active in promoting down ballot races. He failed to tie the unpopular Trump to the rest of the party and Dems lost seats because of it

Isn’t this the basis for the “Bernie would’ve won” argument? I’ve always worried that trading stronger showing among white non-college wouldn’t work if suburban whites stayed R, but I can easily imagine a D populism that’s more pointedly aimed at Trump voters

The problem is people focus on individual elections rather than building long term, so a theoretical working class coalition would be more durable and bigger but a lot of people assume it can be built in an election cycle which flies in the face of history.

56k votes in WI, GA and AZ are all that stands between Trump and an Electoral College tie (and a reelection vote in House dominated by GOP-led states). Too close to praise Biden’s great coalition.

Yes, it’s possible. It’s also incredibly unlikely and leftists ought to soberly acknowledge the world as it is and start from there!l desire or the ought.

The "world as it is" is in part shaped by deliberately decisions taken by political parties. Abandoning non-college voters is something parts of the Democratic party is choosing to do (Schumer's famous comments are salient).
