If the vote count keeps going the way it is, then it'll be the case that in neither 2016 or 2020 did the populist giant Donald Trump get as high a vote share as Mitt Romney. Obviously Trump's electoral college edge was better, but still a limited appeal.

Any normal political party would be beside themselves with delight at the thought of a two-time popular vote loser who's never cracked a 50% approval rating being the opposition leader for the next four years.

If you lose the popular vote by a big enough margin, you can lose it by a smaller margin and still lose it by alot. I take zero comfort in Trump's political success, or that white people of both genders have chosen him twice.

The circumstances of the election were such that voter turnout increased dramatically. Getting 10 million more votes is no more impressive now than it was when WJB got a million more votes in defeat in 1896 than Grover Cleveland got in victory four years earlier.
