The only part of Anderson's campaign that hurt Carter was him refusing to debate which turned into Reagan vs Anderson. Polling at the time had Carter/Reagan roughly tied as a second choice for Anderson voters. Supporters a mix of liberal elite/Rockefeller Republicans/independents
