Excellent interview with @davidshor. "The nationalizing of elections means whenever any elected Democrat goes out and says something that’s unpopular, unless the rest of the party very forcefully pushes back every Democrat will face an electoral penalty."https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/11/david-shor-analysis-2020-election-autopsy-democrats-polls.html …

And yet the GOP ran QAnon candidates (some who won) without apparent penalty.

yep and republican candidates take all kinds of very unpopular positions like opposing minimum wage hikes, anti-choice and anti-medicaid. Yet somehow those don't automatically nationalize but dems positions, which tend to be popular, do? Wha?

They absolutely paid a price for opposing the ACA. When Akin and Mourdock made their comments on rape and pregnancy in 2012, they absolutely paid a price, and arguably it had ripple effects on other campaigns, too.

They take hits on their incredibly unpopular positions. And their positions on the major issues are really unpopular. Way more so than dems. If the formula of "talk about popular stuff not unpopular stuff" is the game, well, ummmm, why aren't we winning running away?

Because the GOP has multiple structural advantages, plus most American voters dislike socialism a lot more than they dislike free-market capitalism.

The one structural advantage Republicans have is that Democratic leadership class doesn't want to run against GOP but only against Trump, which strengthens GOP.https://twitter.com/MSNBC/status/1311346089459625985 …

Indeed, that's a very big advantage for republicans, and it's totally self-inflicted on dems by their "leadership"
