Reagan may have coopted Americans' distrust of government, but he is in no sense its origin point. At most, his sometimes anti-statist rhetoric may have amplified the current he was drawing on—and that's no less true of, say, Jimmy Carter or Jerry Brown.https://twitter.com/nytopinion/status/1326912615201845254 …

Not true. Remember that trust in government spiked after 9/11. Don’t sleep on how much the Second Gulf War, Katrina, and the 2008 financial crisis eroded trust.

It's age related. JFK was shot when I was in 8th grade, I graduated from high school in 1968. I was done.

I think this is crucial to explaining the decline of confidence in government. A three-part punch - Vietnam - Watergate - Federal civil rights legislation and welfare expansions perceived as targeting minorities Almost every segment of society felt betrayed by at least one

For a particular generation. We have a Jeffersonian foundation, “state’s rights” & federal distrust from the Civil War and Reconstruction, Hoover’s rugged individualism, McCarthyism, & Goldwater’s conservatism as well. I’d add NSA spying/Snowden/WikiLeaks for younger gens too

That is how I remember it. The day Kennedy was shot, America lost her innocence. Johnson told us he wouldn't "bomb VN back to the stone age" like Goldwater. But he sure gave it a try, and we started to doubt. Then Nixon came and pulled the rug out. Presidents betrayed our trust.

In other words: the behavior of the government (re: ‘Nam, W’gate, Iraq II, Katrina) led to mistrust in government. Often failures of leaders’ character.
