I've been reading Jonathan Spence's history of modern China and it's very disorienting how political and military leaders who failed in major tasks were expected to resign ad retire in disgrace. What a strange way to do things!

Yes, how odd. Consequence for failure?! How could a great civilization be built on that?

Did they at least write bitter op-eds and try to take credit for all their successors accomplishments?

I've been looking for a history of China book. Is this a good one to get a pretty full picture of Chinese history with the right level of balance between details and breadth?

The early chapters are a bit too much court history but it picks up when it gets to the 20th century. Also only deals with 17th century to present, so you might want a more comprehensive book.

Drugs, foreign meddling, mass psychosis movements (Boxers and Taiping), slavish adherence to obsolete form of government (Confucian civil service)...every historical analogy falls apart eventually but we should expand from the usual Rome, Nazi Germany, US Civil War scenarios.
