Joe Biden, the head of the ticket, ran on spending more money for police. No congressional Democrat ran on defund the police. So if the slogan hurt, that's a failure on the part of Democrats to get their message across despite billions in campaign spending.https://twitter.com/AlexThomp/status/1326143903075069953 …

You ever watch Fox? Way too many people in the suburbs/exurbs do. It didn’t hurt Joe Biden much because you believed he wasn’t for it, but easier to stick to lesser known reps no matter what they said
-
also there were Dems who did support defunding with their votes. In NYC, City Council did vote to cut the police budget. Missouri City Council did pass a defund measure, as did Seattle's.

but how do you effectively counter the message, though? I don't think that "no, we don't want to defund the police; actually, we want to throw more money at police" is all that effective when people rightly perceive Democrats as representing those oppressed by police.
-
maybe, just mayyyybee, it might be more effective for the party perceived as more progressive to, i dunno, actually support progressive policies? maybe it's actually the confused, inscrutable nature of the Dems politics that turns off voters? i mean does anyone remember this:

They are terrible at message discipline. Look how rapidly the GOP falls in line under “legal votes” and how marshaled they are at getting prominent figures out front on all channels parroting the same points - amplified by Fox News echo. Dems have no where near that continuity.
