I feel like it's a bit obvious that anyone that signed the constitution into law, the literal founding document of our legal system, without abolishing slavery was not, in fact, an abolitionist.

If you adhere to the orthodox marxist belief that capitalism facilitated the sweeping away of slavery as an outdated mode if production, then you’d have to at least credit Hamilton with setting into motion the forces that accomplished that.

In any case he was so enthusiastic about seeing combat that he offered his resignation as Washington's aide if he was not allowed to command a brigade in battle. His compatriots often wondered if he was trying to kill himself due to his apparent "courage" on the battlefield.
