right, we'll never know what might have been had he just shut up and turned the whole thing over to fauci. i suspect he would have won the election, just a hunch.

Yep - this is the right counterfactual. Scott Morrison looked dead in the water after the bushfires, but merely not messing up coronavirus has his numbers back to being healthy. It really wouldn't have been hard for Trump to handle the virus at Morrison's level.

Yes, if he had done a better job of pretending to fight the virus, I believe he would have won.

Yep. Even a half-hearted, half-assed effort on Trump’s part to fight the pandemic would’ve probably won him a second term. And saved more than 100,000 lives. Hard to fathom on any level.

I was working abroad in Scandinavia on 9/11, with an international team of Americans, Swedes, and Spaniards. We realized on the day itself that as horrific as the tragedy was, a rally-around-the-flag situation empowering Cheney and Rove would be an even worse tragedy. It was.

I will argue that counterintuitively, his abject mishandling of the coronavirus helped prop him up. It give his supporters something to rally around. I think in a world where COVID never happened, Biden would’ve gotten similar turnout but Trump’s would’ve faded.

This is also worth considering, especially considering the ways things played out in the final days
