I didn't think Biden was 2020's guy and I felt the Dems were too timid on policy.
But, now, seeing how hugely popular Trump remains, I think they made the right call.
Has any incumbent president lost* while increasing their vote before? Not Bush, Carter, Hoover or Taft.

Or maybe Biden ran a bad campaign which ended up much closer than it should have been and almost any other Democrat would have been better?

You think? I wasn't for Biden, but I honestly don't think the candidates I preferred (Warren, Sanders) would have won.

Not necessarily them (Sanders is a real wild card) but Klobuchar or Booker or any other mainstream figure? Biden ran a zombie campaign that was very resistant to listening (i.e. the many complaints of Latino activists that community was being ignored).

Klobuchar comes across as a mean boss and Booker comes across as a super phony guy. Biden for all his faults has some degree of old school charm and comes across as a kind man.

His campaign had no energy, as
@HeerJeet rightly notes. But his persona as a fundamentally decent person was effective and powerful IMO, a perfect foil to Trump.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

Honestly I don't know how it would have gone if there weren't a lot of activist energy in the blue wall states (mainly from people who didn't care for Biden). The campaign itself was dismaying and demobilizing. Fortunately people really hate Trump.

This analysis is food for thought, but Biden was constrained by campaigning in a pandemic. He was more responsible with his mass events. Trump's rallies, esp. in the last weeks, were dangerous and irresponsible, but probably helped Trump mobilize last-minute enthusiasm.

Biden could have done other things than Trump style rallies. The unions, Latinos groups, and Bernie people were screaming about the need for more door to door and local outdoor events. Biden's campaign was top-down and media-driven, which had a cost.
