help me understand how "learn to code" is different than "learn to fix cars" or "learn to be a plumber" or "learn to [insert trade skill here]". software is eating the world. for example, their previous employer uses software written by other people.

Programmer here. I think anyone can learn to do basic coding, but higher education is required for doing so at scale with efficiency. Without the extra knowledge you'll get programs with crashes, data loss, and slow response times.

The issue is that we live in a world dominated by sound bytes. Imagine the right wing media snagging that one and putting it out there (likely already in the works). It drives home their message that Democrats disdain middle America and blue collar workers.
