Abigail Spanberger has had like 4 profiles in the Washington Post and was made the face of "natsec Democrats" who forced Pelosi to pursue impeachment. The whining is interminable. https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1324687462665539585 …

I'm reasonably interested in American politics, and I could not have told you who Abigail Spanberger was before yesterday. This is not someone who has gotten a lot of national press coverage.

Amira Hassan @itsAmira_HThey’ve been running as the anti-squad for 2 years, disparaged their colleagues every chance they got and still have the audacity to blame progressive women of color and policies. You can’t call yourself a leader if you don’t take responsibility for your actions. https://twitter.com/ddayen/status/1324722841120501761 … pic.twitter.com/eppBOFrhH02 replies 2 retweets 44 likes -

I think the reality is there was a big media push to make Spanberger the AOC of moderate Dems & it didn't work -- whether for lack of charisma or poverty of policy ideas is debatable.

Ah yes, I remember well that Sundance documentary about Spanberger's race for Congress, and the SXSW appearance, and the pieces in Rolling Stone and Interview and the cover of Time magazine.

Most (non-conservative) political media is produced by and for (non-conservative) people who are interested in reading about American politics on a daily basis -- and such people tend to be a lot more ideologically motivated/progressive than the median voter in VA-07

AOC stories click. Media outlets follow their market incentives. Even if there were a way for a moderate to galvanize such attention through personal charisma, the act of becoming a darling of mainstream political media would prolly make her read as "liberal" to her constituents

Beto did galvanize such attention, and if he'd just decided to run for Senate in Texas he would have galvanized even more.

Sure, although I think Beto is actually something that people accuse AOC of being: a telegenic pol who has embraced extreme positions that will limit future opportunity. I mean the gun thing and the church thing are bad, even outside of Texas.

That was after he started panicking. If he'd just run for Senate, and not tried to make that huge leap, he would be a big star right now.
