when the dust settles on the Trump era I think we'll be struck, most of all, by its ideological emptiness. Neither of the last two US elections has been fought over questions of material politics or even governing philosophy. It's identity, affect, & personality all the way down

This may make me unpopular, but—wasn't a huge amount of the Trump vote about policy? Trump voters quite clearly want draconian immigration laws/enforcement. Trump voters want the government to force media and online spaces to let rightwing bullies get away with anything. >

Trump voters want environmental laws struck down, because "own the libs." Many Trump voters want the US to leave foreign treaties and ally itself with vicious dictators, because "macho." All of that is policy, if reprehensible policy. And Trump did it, or tried to do it.
