True. I've long argued that when sentient AI self-assembles, it won't be in a high-end university or corporate lab. It'll be in a 17-foot-long CSS file at a regional bank in rural America. They should never have introduced variables to CSS. It'll kill us all

Heinlein's Moon Is a Harsh Mistress basically has that plot. Sentient AI develops in backwater (a lunar colony) from computer doing other tasks.

      It's probably Heinlein's best book.

Agreed. My first encounter with him was, hilariously/surreal-ly, "Farnham's Freehold", at my North York junior high. It was ... what they had on hand! I was like, okay, what the f was *that* and someone said, oh, yeah -- try "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress"

That is CRAZY that you stumbled on that as your first one. (I think my first exposure to him was either The Puppet Masters or Starman Jones--like you, I pulled whatever they had in the sci-fi section of my jr-high library.)

After living through 9/11, I can't buy the resolution of the Lunar rebellion as remotely realistic. Once the Loonies started bombarding US targets from orbit, the US response would have been close to genocidal. No way do they give up after one failed attack.
