The populism mattered, as I’ve argued many times before. But it absolutely was not “in spite” of Trump’s Rodney-Dangerfield-style riffing. That was integral to his appeal.

It had an appeal because it re-enforced the sense he was an anti-system politician who would break the rules. But I have to think it has a different effect during a pandemic. I mean the base still loves it, but it turns off many more.

Many post-2016 studies on Trump voters have concluded that it was the hate not "economic anxiety” that rallied so many non-college educated, white voters to his side. Trump’s open hostility to "the cultural left” (i.e., racism, sexism, anti-LGBT,…) won him that race.
