Going out on a limb, I think the impulse to give a second chance to Ruth Shalit Barrett was commendable. It's tragic that she muffed her opportunity, which will make it harder for others to get second chances too. But we need to be open to people changing.

reeks more of clubby insiderism in the media industry where her husband is a powerful executive, than any real belief in redemption.

As for Ruth Shalit, one of the things I think we've seen from other serial plagiarists/fabricators is that we're looking at some kind of pathology. I believe in forgiveness and second chances and all that, but these folks just aren't wired with the values we expect of journalists

Give her a second chance, sure, but also you know her history so be extra vigilant with your fact-checking. The Atlantic screwed that part up miserably.

I can even feel some sympathy for her in that if you are a good writer, but bad journalist, this is always going to be your temptation. Still, I think it's foolish to risk the prestige of your publication on someone who has demonstrated before that their word can't be trusted

Obviously, I know that some journalists are better at storytelling, while others excel at reporting, but in journalism, I don't think anyone can be considered a good writer if their story is based on made-up facts.
