So it's maybe lack of people leads to chattiness? People have a certain reserve of chit-chat and in denser populations you have to parcel it out more carefully. Amt of reserve is determined by how much heat you lose when you open your mouth, thus the taciturn temperate zones.

I think it transcends class, it's deeply cultural, like two different breeds. Historical too. There's not a physical wall dividing north and south but there's a wall in the mind.
