I hate to be Coen Bros. explainer guy but Barton Fink is not an attack on politically engaged art. Fink is based on Clifford Odets, who named names under McCarthyism (i.e. "a fink"). It wouldn’t shock me if the Coens previously scrapped the Fink sequel and divided some of the plot points (i.e. Red Scare, early 60’s setting, artist struggling to make it in new wave) and put them into Hail Caesar and Inside Llewyn Davis respectively.
