So I re-read Dune thinking I could write something about the new adaptation, which now won't be out for another year. Still worth it though! Dune is good, even more impressive than I remember it. At times clunky but with with a cumulative visionary grandeur.

I might go back and re-read the Dune sequels, which I don't have fond memories of. But I read those as a teenager when they were first coming out and some people I trust say they have some merits.

Have you read the whole series? What's the best stopping point?

I would say God-Emperor is the point of diminishing returns.

I took a 100 level anthro class at the University of Virginia as an undergrad called “Fantasy and Social Values,” and Dune was one of the required readings. I never would have plodded through it otherwise, and I’m grateful that I did.

Completely agree. Dune is one of a handful of favorite books I keep copies of and re-read every five years or so.

For a book with little action and tons of inner-dialogue, it's revolutionary.

I love the book, but rereading it a few months I thought the language much too arch and contrived. Then I listened to an interview with Herbert from 67 or so and realized that’s actually how he spoke. So much of Dune sticks with me.

It's a piece of Bene Gesserit propaganda (you cannot break the conditioning of a Suk doctor), but an awesome book. Sequels have lesser merits IMHO.

I read Dune many times as a teenager and was gifted a Frank Herbert signed calendar (which I still have). Somewhat enjoyed the 1984 film (ok, I was into Sting). It's a lot to put in a movie. I need to re-read it now as an "vintage" adult. Still one of the greatest sci-fi books.

The SyFy miniseries was a very good adaptation.
