1. Speaking of Sacha Baron Cohen, I'll confess that I was partly wrong in anticipating the worst from Sorkin's Chicago 7 movie (where Cohen plays Abbie Hoffman). I thought Sorkin's earnest liberalism would completely miss the anarchic spirit of 1960s.

6. In real life, Abbie Hoffman did a lot of trolling by attacking his namesake Judge Julius Hoffman. Abbie said the judge was “Shande fur de Goyim" which he hilariously translated as “front man for the WASP power elite.” Imagine not using that.

7. Some more thoughts on The Trial of the Chicago 7, which is pretty decent as entertainment but not good history.https://www.thenation.com/article/culture/chicago-7-trial-film/ …

He got Hoffman right (and I think did him justice) in showing that he was capable of being introspective, articulate, and deadly serious when he felt like it.

Sorkin can only do a simulacrum of humor - the dozens of repeated generic one-liners testify to that. And as Studio 60 demonstrated, he has the squarest possible conception of what comedy is for

"We think we signed up for a fun, sexy show about a bunch of crazy kids putting on a production. This is why I know I’m not going to like this. By Sorkinizing these events and sucking all the surreal humor out of the trial.

To be fair, being funnier than a Sorkin script is an amazingly low bar.

Capra/Mr. Smith more than 12 Angry Men... in my opinion... I mean, it felt more like "...on this special episode of the West Wing...." second act was strong and it led to me stealing a book! All in all, a good thing.

Instead of watching the movie, or at least in addition to it, people should listen to the dollop on Abbie Hoffmanhttps://allthingscomedy.com/podcast/the-dollop/451---abbie-hoffman---part-one …
