One thing that surprised me about the Sorkin Chicago 7 movie is that Abbie Hoffman came across as more sympathetic than Tom Hayden. I wasn't expecting that from Sorkin -- or is Hayden's anguish meant to be sympathetic rather than craven?
Yeah, Cohen's performance really makes Hoffman sympathetic -- and Hayden comes off as a colder and more calculating figure. On the other hand Hayden has an arc and Hoffman doesn't.

Hoffman exists in Sorkin’s script solely to give an approving nod to Hayden’s transformation. It’s screenwriting 101 garbage. It’s like giving him a black friend who nods and gives him a thumb’s up.
