considering Sorkin's opinion of Abbie Hoffman in Newsroom, I was surprised, too

I'd attribute it more to Cohen's acting than Sorkin's writing/directing

I thought Sorkin wanted Hayden to be the character with an arc, whereas Hoffman was just this agent of chaos.

Yeah, I think that's right.

Perhaps the message is that while the Abbie Hoffmans of the world might garner more love and support from the romantics and idealists, its Hayden’s pragmatism that translates into favorable policy outcomes in the long run.
-
While that’s the headline takeaway it’s portrayed as a bit more complex than that. There’s the emphasis on the blood in the streets comment and the movie ending with Hayden rejecting playing nice and instead engaging in a symbolic protest at sentencing.

I thought it was a very mature move from sorkin that showed the respect given all characters, IMO. His judgment let’s him down in the end, but for everybody. Otherwise a pretty damn good movie
