It's kind of amazing to see the overlap between people who are opposed to cancel culture, PC etc and those trying to shame people for being amused by an inherently absurd story. The impulse to laugh in such a situation is inherent in what it is to be human, for good or ill.

Laugher in a socially absurd situation can be punishment but it can also be the path to reconciliation: a way of making light of something that when viewed clinically might be disturbing. Jokes are also a way of saying "this is ridiculous but not a crime." It's complex!

Mockery can have an element of social sanction but not necessarily so --its often about the shock of the unexpected. The classic pie-in-the-face isn't about social sanction but something more primordial (the disruption of norms).

Pretty empty philosophical exercise unless you’re gonna provide examples

I would argue that the issue is more an overlap than a conflation: public mockery is A punishment, if a lesser one. Particularly at the scales now possible. I don't care about Toobin but let's not pretend that opinions express themselves. The choice to do so can be examined.

I am reasonably certain it has to do with the professional take-havers class finding mockery intolerable and having uniquely thin skin. Remember Bret Stephens and the bed bug incident? And so even when someone is caught masturbating during a meeting they have class solidarity.
